What is Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic medicine (also referred to as ‘naturopathy’) is a multi-disciplinary approach of primary healthcare which emphasizes prevention and the self-healing process through the use of natural therapies. Naturopathy combines scientific knowledge with the use of non-invasive, natural therapies, and techniques to maintain optimal health, prevent illness and stimulate the body’s inherent healing processes.
The principles of Naturopathy were first used by the Hippocratic School of Medicine in about 400B.C. The Greek philosopher Hippocrates believed in viewing the whole person in regards to finding a cause of disease, and using the laws of nature to induce cure. It was from this original school of thought that the foundation of Naturopathic medicine practice is built upon.
The 6 principles include:
1. First Do No Harm
2. Use the Healing Power of Nature
3. Teach the principles of health
4. Treat the whole person
5. Discover and treat the root cause, not just the effect
6. Emphasise prevention
Primary health care includes prevention, health promotion, and patient education to support the body’s self-healing abilities.
